Dementia Friends at Birch Green

Birch Green recently welcomed back local Dementia Friends Champion Joe Sherville into the home to help more people understand the impact dementia has on people’s lives.

Joe regularly delivers sessions in the community to provide information on the condition and enable people to sign up to become a Dementia Friend.

Dementia Friends is run by the Alzheimer’s Society, to help change people’s perceptions and increase understanding on dementia.

At this latest session, seven Birch Green staff members signed up to become Dementia Friends, which brings our total to 22.

With more than 850,000 people in the UK living with dementia, and the figure set to increase to more than 1million by 2025, it’s important for us to continue the good work in raising awareness of the condition and supporting those affected by it.

Dementia Awareness Week at Birch Green

Birch Green Care Home is encouraging visitors, residents and family members to learn about dementia during a week-long series of events and activities.

Dementia Awareness Week runs from May 15-21, and is designed to encourage people worried about dementia to ask for help and support.

More than 850,000 people in the UK live with dementia, a figure set to increase to more than 1million by 2025.

Birch Green in Skelmersdale is a leader in the field of dementia care, and will be helping visitors, staff and residents to take part in a series of events.

A special Dementia Friends course is planned for the home’s bistro, with local Dementia Friend worker Joe Sherville. Staff, relatives and residents will be given information on dementia and invited to discuss and ask questions.

Leaflets will also be given out to surrounding homes over the course of the week, with staff and residents joining in.

Phillippa McGrath, general manager of the home, said: “Dementia Awareness Week is a great way to encourage people to learn more about a condition which affects a large number of people, and their families, across the UK.

“We would encourage family members of our residents to stop by and join in with the Dementia Friends course, a great way to get answers to questions and to share experiences.”

Goodbye to Julie

Julie Taylor, our wonderful housekeeper, recently said goodbye to us as she left Birch Green.

Julie has been a much-loved part of life at Birch Green for years, and she will be sadly missed. There were tears all round as we presented her with gifts including bunches of flowers.

We’ve loved working with Julie and wish her all the best for the future.

Bundles of joy at Birch Green

Recently we told you about how Birch Green staff are experiencing a bit of a baby boom, with an abundance of little ones being born over the past 12 months, as well as more bundles of joy on the way.

To celebrate, we held a special tea for two in our bistro for all our new mummies and mummies-to-be, and our residents were so pleased to meet the new arrivals and have a cuddle.

Jamie Matthews brought in baby Olly, Nicky Rotherham brought in baby Jessica and Kim Hurst brought baby Isla.

With it being half term, some ladies also brought in their older children, who put further smiles on the faces of our residents by joining in with some singing and dancing.

Expectant mums Jess Mooney and Rebekah Aldred were also there, listening to stories from our new mums, as well as pearls of wisdom from some of our residents on what to expect from motherhood.

Unfortunately our other new mums couldn’t make it, but congratulations also to Lisa Carter, Lyndsey Wood, Kay Matthews, Meg Edwards, Emma Thomas and Jemma Carrigg. We can’t wait to meet your little ones soon.
