Our golden moment winner

Last week our quarterly Golden Moment was awarded to Gill Seddon, our Lifestyle Support Leader at Birch Green who recently went above and beyond to support a resident through a very difficult and sad time.

After the unexpected loss of her son, Gill comforted and supported our resident to help her with the trying time ahead.

After helping with the funeral arrangements, which were difficult due to the distance involved, Gill was able to set up a video link so our lady could be a part of her son’s funeral on the day.

The following week Gill along with Ali, our Financial Administrator travelled down to Wolverhampton to collect the precious ashes of our resident’s son and bring him home, back to his mum.

Birch Green then held a lovely remembrance service in our remembrance garden with the help of Rick our local Minister from the Ecumenical Centre.

After the remembrance service our resident was surrounded by all her Birch Green Care Home family as we held a special luncheon to pay our respects and to support a lovely lady.

Thank you Gill for going above and beyond, your caring nature is one for us all to behold.

Gill is photographed receiving her certificate from Donna Briggs, Managing Director.

Birch Green’s own ‘safari’

Birch Green’s residents got up-close-and-personal with a range of animals during a visit recently by Home Safari.

The organisation offers animal-assisted therapy sessions and visited Birch Green with creatures including Jethro the Skunk, who was as popular as always, and Ziggy the Gecko.

Kay, one of our staff members, has always wanted a skunk and had the honour of taking him to visit all our ladies and gentlemen.

Betty, the Bearded Dragon, was also very popular, and Christine, one of our residents, said his skin felt ‘really funny’ as she gave him a stroke.

The oldest animal, 17-year-old Fred the Tortoise, was quite happy walking around the lounge.

Thanks to everyone for visiting, we can’t wait to see you again soon.

Getting creative in Birch Green’s cafe

Recently a group of residents at Birch Green Care Home in Skelmersdale spent time getting creative.

Hosting the activity was the care home’s Forget Me Not Café, where the group was keen to show off their artistic interpretations of the things they hold dear in life.

Plenty of craft materials were made available for the occasion, and residents were painting, drawing, creating collages and modelling.

Keep checking the website and social media to see their finished creations.

Baking cakes at Birch Green

Birch Green Care Home was filled with the aroma of freshly baked cakes recently.

A group of residents decided the best thing to accompany a nice cuppa would be some cakes, so set to work after deciding on the recipe to use.

After lots of weighing, whisking and mixing, and being cooked in the oven under the watchful eye of Edna, the cakes were then cooled and decorated.

They went down a treat!

Springhill Care Group shines with Platinum award

Springhill Care Group has been awarded the prestigious Platinum award from Investors in People – the highest accolade that can be achieved through the scheme held by only two per cent of all organisations which have been assessed.

Assessors highlighted the ‘high performing’ Springhill Care Group for how it has further strengthened its organisation since it was awarded a Gold standard three years ago to join only two per cent of IIP accredited clients to achieve Platinum.

The IIP report said: “Evidence was presented of significant development in its approach to innovation and continuous improvement. The working environment developed as a result of the effective leadership approach has been fundamental to the creating of a high-performance organisational culture.

“Both managers and staff across all three nursing and care homes within Springhill Care Group described how they experience very effective leadership through a very inclusive and collaborative leadership style. People described how everything they do and the way they do things is driven by the company values. This starts with values-based recruitment.”

Built on the three pillars of leading, supporting and improving, the IIP framework sets out what it takes to deliver a people management system that enables organisations to succeed by realising the potential of their people.

Donna Briggs, managing director of Springhill Care Group, said: “This is great news for all staff because they help to make us the organisation we are. I’d like to thank our staff team for creating the culture of excellence we have which ultimately ensures that the quality of care for our residents is second-to-none.”

Chris Jones, Director of Operations at Investors In People, said: “Platinum is our highest award and recognises high performance achieved through integrated people practices. Springhill Care Group first achieved Investors in People in 1995 and since then we have seen the group go from strength to strength.”

As part of the IIP online assessment process, the care group exceeded both the IIP average and care sector benchmarks with an organisational benchmark score of 799 out of 900 where care sector average is 765 and overall IIP average is 724.

Assessors added that on-site evidence presented was found to fully validate the online results of the IIP survey amongst all staff and was “a very strong performance against an internationally recognised business transformation framework.

The assessors cited examples such as the Admiral Nursing Programme offering guidance in dementia care and programmes developed in the Assistant Nursing Practitioner and Teaching Homes programmes.
