We were all saddened recently when popular resident Archie Johnstone passed away.
Known as the last surviving member of RAF Bomber Command, Archie had lived at Birch Green for two years. He was just a few months away from celebrating his 100th birthday when he died.
Archie was hand-picked to join the famous 617 squadron and in 1944 was involved in the sinking of the notorious Tirpitz battleship.
He flew more than 50 missions as a Lancaster Bomber navigator and bomb aimer, and his background was honoured in 2012 when a Lancaster Bomber carried out a fly-past over Birch Green to mark his 98th birthday.
Archie had a fascinating background and was well-liked at Birch Green by residents and staff alike. We were all very proud to call him a friend.
